rTG vs ethyl ester

Two kinds of fish oil hide behind the same word on the front of the box. What separates them is the shape of the molecule, and one freshness number.

Put two omega-3 capsules side by side. Both say fish oil. Both say EPA and DHA. Both probably say concentrate. Nothing on either front tells you the two things that actually differ.

The first is the shape the fatty acids are held in. The second is how stale the oil already is. A label answers neither by default, so this piece is about how to read for both.

What omega-3 is for.

EPA and DHA are two fats your body cannot make in useful amounts. They come from oily fish, or from a capsule.

They contribute to the normal function of the heart. That is what regulators allow a label to say, because the evidence supports it. DHA also contributes to normal brain function and normal vision.

That is the reason to take it. The rest of this piece is about whether the thing in the bottle is actually good.

The word the label leans on.

«Fish oil concentrate» is doing a lot of quiet work.

Oil pressed straight from fish carries EPA and DHA at fairly modest levels, mixed with many other fats. To make a concentrate, the manufacturer has to take the oil apart and rebuild the part worth keeping.

There are two common places to stop rebuilding. The word «concentrate» covers both, which is exactly why it tells you so little.

Where you stop is a cost decision. One form is where the process naturally leaves the oil. The other needs an extra manufacturing step, and costs more. A front label that only says concentrate lets a producer sell the cheaper one while sounding identical.

The shape of the molecule.

Natural fish oil is a triglyceride. Picture a three-pronged molecule called glycerol, with three fatty acids hanging off it. That is the shape fats take in food, and in your own body. It is the reference.

To concentrate the oil, that shape is taken apart. The fatty acids are pulled off the glycerol and stuck onto ethanol instead. The result is called an ethyl ester. It is not a form found in food. It exists because it behaves well in the next step: freed from the bulky backbone, the pieces can be separated and the EPA and DHA pulled out.

Re-esterified triglyceride, or rTG, is what you get if you keep going. Enzymes take the concentrated fatty acids and stitch them back onto glycerol, rebuilding the original shape with the better contents. The «re» is the whole story. The bonds were broken to concentrate, then deliberately remade.

The shortcut, and the step back.

Ethyl ester is the shortcut. You stop at the halfway point. It is legal, widely used, and it does deliver concentrated EPA and DHA. What it does not do is return the oil to its natural shape.

rTG pays for the step back. Re-attaching the fatty acids costs an extra enzyme process and loses some yield along the way. That cost is real, and it is why rTG oils are dearer.

The honest way to put the difference is structural, not promissory. rTG restores the natural triglyceride shape. Ethyl ester does not. You are entitled to know which one is in the bottle, and to notice when the label will not say.

Freshness is the other half.

Form is only half the story. The other half is how stale the oil is, and most labels ignore it completely.

The same chemistry that makes EPA and DHA useful also makes them fragile. Exposed to air, heat and light, the oil goes rancid. That happens in two stages, and each one can be measured.

The first stage produces compounds called peroxides. The peroxide value, PV, counts them. Those then break down into the compounds behind the fishy smell, counted by the anisidine value, AV. Because either number alone can mislead, the industry combines them: TOTOX is two times PV, plus AV. One figure for how far the oil has gone off.

A freshness number is only useful if it was measured on the oil you are holding. Oxidation climbs with time and handling, so a figure from a year-old master batch says nothing about your capsule. This is why per-batch reporting matters more than a printed house average.

What to ask the certificate.

The permitted claim on the box settles none of this. It is granted to the molecule, not to your bottle, and it is silent on both form and freshness. The document that speaks to your bottle is the batch certificate.

So the questions are narrow. Which form: rTG or ethyl ester? What is the TOTOX for this batch, as a figure rather than a promise? And was the oil tested by an independent programme rather than in-house? IFOS-grade testing is the usual reference.

A producer confident in the oil publishes all three. One leaning on the word «concentrate» does not.

For the record: our Omega-3 is a re-esterified triglyceride, tested to IFOS-grade, with TOTOX published per batch on the certificate that ships with it. Those are statements about form and freshness, not about outcomes.

«Concentrate» covers both the cheap form and the dear one. That is exactly why it is the word on the front of the box.

Two bottles can carry the same words and hold different oils. One question settles the form: rTG or ethyl ester. One number settles the freshness: TOTOX, for this batch, from an outside lab. Neither appears on the front of the box, and both appear on a certificate. Read the certificate.
