Two very different products reach the shelf as Lion's Mane. One is the mushroom itself: the white cascading growth you would recognise. The other is mycelium, the root-like phase, usually grown on grain and dried with that grain still in it.
Both are legal. Both can be labelled honestly. They are not the same material. Which one you are holding is not a matter of trust, though. It is written on the ingredient line, and more precisely on the certificate.
What this one is not going to claim.
Most articles about Lion's Mane start with what it does for you. This one cannot, and the reason is worth knowing.
Regulators keep a list of health claims a supplement is allowed to make. Lion's Mane is not on it. So any brand telling you what this mushroom will do for your brain is either quoting research that has not cleared that bar, or simply breaking the rules.
What can be checked is the material. Whether you are getting mushroom or grain, and whether anyone measured it properly. That turns out to be the difference between a good product and a cheap one anyway.
Two parts of one organism.
A mushroom is the fruiting body of a fungus. It is the part that grows above ground to spread spores.
Below it, and before it, is the mycelium: a network of fine threads that does the feeding and spreading. Lion's Mane is both. The two tissues are chemically different.
Scientists tell them apart by different marker compounds. Hericenones sit with the fruiting body, erinacines with mycelium. That is why the literature treats them as two raw materials rather than two grades of one. Noting where the compounds sit is not a claim about what they do. It is how the species is catalogued.

The grain problem.
Commercial mycelium is rarely harvested clean.
It is grown on sterilised grain, usually brown rice or oats, which the fungus spreads through. At harvest the mycelium and its grain bed are dried and milled together. A spec sheet might call the result myceliated grain, or mycelial biomass. The powder is part fungus, part starch.
Depending on how far the fungus got before harvest, the grain can be most of the weight.
None of that is fraud if it is declared. The trouble is that the ingredient line often just says «Lion's Mane mycelium» while a good share of each capsule is the flour it grew on.

Why «polysaccharides» is the wrong word.
The accepted marker for real mushroom content is beta-glucan, a compound in fungal cell walls. So a label reporting «polysaccharides» looks reassuring. It should not.
Polysaccharide is a broad family, and starch is one of them. Starch is the main carbohydrate in grain. It is an alpha-glucan, not a beta-glucan.
So a big «total polysaccharide» figure on a grain-grown product can be mostly grain starch, counted as if it were mushroom. The number is real. What it implies is not.
How the number gets measured.
The test method decides everything here.
The cheap approaches weigh total carbohydrate, or use a colour reaction that responds to sugars in general. Both are inflated by starch and by loose sugar.
The enzymatic beta-glucan assay is narrower and harder to fool. It uses specific enzymes to break down the starch and free sugars, measures those separately, and subtracts them. What is left, and reported, is the beta-glucan.
It costs more and it produces a smaller number. A brand that runs it is choosing an honest figure over a flattering one.
What to look for.
Two checks settle most of it.
On the ingredient line, look for «fruiting body». Not «mycelium», not «mycelial biomass», not «myceliated rice». If the source is not stated at all, assume grain. The clean material gets named, because it costs more to make.
On the certificate, look for a beta-glucan result from an enzymatic assay. Not a «polysaccharide» percentage. Not an undefined «total glucan». If a figure is quoted, ask which method produced it.
A specific beta-glucan number with a named method is a document. A round polysaccharide percentage with no method is marketing.
Where we stand.
Our Lion's Mane is specified as fruiting body, not mycelium on grain. Each batch is measured by an enzymatic beta-glucan assay, with the result printed on the third-party certificate that ships with it.
The dose is given as the actual weight of fruiting-body material, and stays an honest TBD until the supplier spec locks. Never a round number picked to look good on a label.
What we will not do is tell you what the mushroom does for you. It sits in the cognition part of the range because that is where readers meet it. This piece makes no case for an effect. It describes a raw material and the method that verifies it.
A «polysaccharide» percentage is a claim. An enzymatic beta-glucan figure is a measurement.
The difference between mushroom and grain is not hidden and not a matter of taste. It is legible in two places: the ingredient line, and the assay named on the certificate. Learn to check both and you can tell them apart without taking anyone's word for it. That is the whole exercise. Not being told what to believe, but being handed the document and shown how to read it.
