Creatine's public image is a plastic tub in a gym bag. That does the molecule a disservice. Your body already makes creatine, and it is one of the most studied compounds in the whole field.

This piece reads it the way we read anything here. What the molecule is, what it does in a cell, and why the form on the label matters more than any claim printed next to it.

What it is for.

Regulators have authorised exactly one claim for creatine. It increases physical performance in successive bursts of short, high-intensity exercise. Sprints, lifts, stairs.

That is a narrow claim, and it is the only one a label may make. Research has looked at much more, which the rest of this piece gets to. But research and an authorised claim are different things, and a brand should keep them apart.

So: creatine helps with short repeated efforts. Anything beyond that is a subject of study, not a promise.

Something your body already makes.

Creatine is not exotic. Your body builds it from three amino acids, mostly in the liver and kidneys, and tops it up from food. The dietary sources are meat and fish.

Most of it is stored in muscle, much of it in a charged form called phosphocreatine.

Two things follow. People who eat little or no animal protein get less of it from food, simply because the sources are animal. And a supplement here is not introducing anything foreign. It is adding more of something you already make and store.

The fast battery.

Cells run on a molecule called ATP. They spend it and rebuild it constantly. The amount standing by at any moment would run out in seconds under real effort.

Phosphocreatine is the fast reserve. An enzyme moves a phosphate from it onto spent ATP, recharging it almost instantly. Faster than any other route the cell has.

So creatine works like a small rechargeable battery, sitting next to the tissues that need energy in sharp bursts.

That battery is not only in muscle. The brain and other busy tissues run the same system. This is the mechanism, and it is well mapped. It is also where a careful piece stops, because a mechanism is not an outcome.

Off the bench, carefully.

Because that battery is ordinary cell machinery rather than a muscle curiosity, research spread well beyond sport over the last few decades. It moved into tissues with high and uneven energy demand.

That is the honest reason creatine now comes up in everyday and longevity conversations rather than only athletic ones.

It is also where restraint is needed. A research field growing is not the same as a benefit being established. The permitted claim still covers only short, repeated, high-intensity effort. Everything else is a subject of study, and a label should read that way.

Why the form is the whole argument.

Almost all of that research used one form: creatine monohydrate.

Other forms exist. Ethyl ester, buffered or «alkaline» creatine, hydrochloride. They are sold on solubility or on a smaller scoop, not on beating monohydrate in the evidence.

So choosing monohydrate is not caution. It is choosing the form the studies actually used, so that what is on the shelf matches what was tested. When a product reaches for a novelty form instead, the fair question is what problem it solves, and for whom.

What the certificate controls.

Creatine monohydrate is made by chemical synthesis, not extracted from meat. That is why a well-made creatine suits vegetarians.

The quality variables are what the synthesis leaves behind, and what the starting materials bring with them. Creatinine, dicyandiamide, dihydrotriazine, and heavy metals. That is what a certificate is for.

One ingredient, no flavour.

An unflavoured single-ingredient powder is a transparency decision as much as a taste one.

There is no flavour system hiding an off-note, no sweetener, and no blend where the actual weight of creatine could quietly shrink. The label states one thing, and you can check that figure straight against the certificate.

Flavours, colours and «matrix» language are usually where legibility goes to blur. The plainest formula is also the easiest one to read.
