One of the sunniest places on Earth, and people here still run low on vitamin D. The reason is that your skin makes it, and city life keeps skin out of the sun.

Dubai gets more sun than almost anywhere on Earth. People here still run low on vitamin D. That sounds like a contradiction until you know one thing. Vitamin D is not really something you eat. Your skin makes it, and only when a certain kind of light lands on it.

So the question is not how sunny a city is. It is how much sun reaches skin. This piece covers what vitamin D is for, how your skin makes it, what gets in the way in an air-conditioned city, and the two words worth looking for on a label.

What it is for.

Start with the plain question: what does vitamin D actually do? Mostly it manages calcium. It helps your body take calcium in from food, and it helps keep bones and teeth working normally. It also has a role in normal muscle function and in how the immune system works. That is the whole job description, and it is a broad one.

Vitamin K does a narrower job that sits right next to it. It helps keep bones normal, and it is part of how blood clots. The two are usually sold together for that reason, which the next sections explain.

None of this is a promise. Those are the roles regulators allow a label to state, because the evidence supports them. A supplement is not a treatment for anything.

How your skin makes it.

Your skin already holds the raw material. It is a cousin of cholesterol, sitting in the deeper layers, one small chemical step away from vitamin D. Sunlight takes that step.

Not all sunlight, though. It has to be UVB, one narrow band of ultraviolet light. When UVB lands on that molecule, it turns into vitamin D3. That is the start, not the finish. The liver changes it once, into the form a blood test reads. The kidney changes it again, into the form your body uses.

So vitamin D is less a vitamin than something your body builds in stages. And the first stage needs one thing: UVB on skin.

Why the sunniest cities run low.

UVB is the weak link. It is the easiest part of sunlight to block, and a modern Gulf city blocks it well. Ordinary window glass stops nearly all of it. A sunlit office, a bright living room, a car in traffic — each gives you warmth and glare and none of the light that does the work.

Then there is how people live here. Days run indoors. Midday heat keeps you inside. Clothes cover skin. Sunscreen soaks up ultraviolet before it reaches the cell, which is exactly its job.

None of that is a mistake. It is sensible living in a desert. But it means the reaction rarely gets a chance to run. Sun outside the glass is not sun on skin.

D3 or D2: reading the form.

The first thing to check on a label is which of two molecules it names. Cholecalciferol is D3. It is the exact form your skin makes. Ergocalciferol is D2, made by shining ultraviolet on fungi or yeast.

They are different molecules. Both show up on a blood test, but they are not the same thing. A careful label prints the real name. A vague one just says «vitamin D».

Where the calcium goes.

Vitamin D helps you absorb calcium. That raises a second question: once it is in, where does it go? This is where vitamin K2 comes in.

K2 switches on the proteins that handle calcium inside the body. Two of them, osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein, are part of how calcium is directed to bone.

So pairing D3 with K2 is not a marketing flourish. One nutrient is about taking calcium in. The other is about the proteins that decide what happens next.

MK-7, and why the shape matters.

Inside vitamin K2 the label matters again. The useful type is MK-7. It stays in the blood longer than the short-acting MK-4.

But MK-7 comes in two shapes. Only one of them works in the body. It is called all-trans. The other one, cis, does nothing. A cheap or badly stored K2 can be full of the useless shape and still print «MK-7» on the box, truthfully.

So the thing to look for is not the letters MK-7. It is how much of it is all-trans. Our own D3+K2 is still in development. It specifies MenaQ7 MK-7 in the all-trans form. The dose stays an honest TBD until the supplier spec is locked.

Sun outside the glass is not sun on skin. Vitamin D is made where ultraviolet meets you, and glass, cloth and air-conditioning keep that meeting rare.

Vitamin D depends on where and how you live more than almost any other nutrient. It is also one of the few you can measure directly with a blood test rather than guess at. In a city built to keep people cool and indoors, «plenty of sun» describes the sky, not your skin. None of this means a capsule fixes anything. It is simply a reason to read the form: D3 rather than D2, all-trans MK-7 rather than a cis-heavy blend. So that what is in the bottle matches the biology it is named after.
